A BARNSLEY primary school has been given the go ahead to expand so it can cope with a rising demand for places.

Proposals to extend Hunningley Primary School at Stairfoot to create two additional classrooms were approved by the planning board on Tuesday.

Councillors were told the extra teaching space is needed for the start of 2017/18 academic year as pupil numbers are expected to increase from 377 to 391 by September.

Andrew Burton, a senior planning officer, said the school wants to put a single storey extension onto part of the front playground in order to accommodate the extra numbers.
