Children involved in the summer play scheme in Great Houghton got a treat this week as they were visited by an 85- year- old table tennis champion.
Les D’Arcy, of Wakefield, who is the World Masters Champion in his age group, gave a demonstration of his skills in the welfare hall.
The multitalented ping pong master enjoys weightlifting and athletics, including, the shot putt, long jump, high jump.
In 1998 he competed in a European weightlifting championship in Germany, setting records in the snatch, clean and jerk, and total weight lifted.
Parish Councillor Dorothy Higginbottom described Les as “an inspiration to the children.”
After his show, he talked about his experience's to an audience and answered questions from children.
Les stressed the need for dedication and determination, training a little and often, and to always ask questions and to learn.
His final message to the children was to be the best at whatever they are.
