Donovan Pines has said goodbye to Barnsley fans on social media, with his contract due to expire this summer.

The Reds had an option to extend the American defender’s contract for another year but, although the official retained list has not been released, they appear not to have taken it.

The full retained list could be announced this week with the other senior players out of contract including Josh Benson, Conor McCarthy, Jonathan Lewis and Stephen Humphrys.

US international Pines signed in January last year and played 31 times for the Reds, scoring five goals. After an injury cut last season short, he has often been second choice to Marc Roberts this campaign and barely featured once Conor Hourihane replaced Darrell Clarke as head coach.

He posted on social media: “Thank you, Barnsley, for everything. These past two seasons have meant more to me than words can fully express. I’ve had the honor of playing for a truly special and historic club, and I’m incredibly grateful for every moment.

“To my team-mates, the staff, and everyone behind the scenes — thank you for believing in me and pushing me to grow, not just as a player but as a person.

“To the fans — thank you for welcoming me with open arms and making Barnsley feel like home. Your love and support never went unnoticed, and I’ll carry that with me always.

“It’s been a dream come true to play in England and to learn the game in a place where football means so much. I leave with unforgettable memories, lifelong friendships, and a full heart.
