PENISTONE Grammar School’s under-15 girls’ cricket team have booked their place in the national final at Lord’s after winning at Headingley this week.
The school can now proudly call themselves the best in the north of England after an 11-run victory over Ecclesbourne in the Knight-Stokes Cup semi-final on Monday.
The team’s journey started earlier this month with a comprehensive victory over Ripon.
They qualified for the last four of the tournament after winning their regional knockout tournament, representing Yorkshire against schools from Cheshire, Durham and Cumbria.
In their opening match they beat St Leonard’s before being victorious over Altrincham Grammar School for Girls in the quarter-final.
The semi-final at Headingley has ensured they will play at Lord’s against the winner of the southern side of the competition in September.
The team managers are Connor Smythe and Cameron Simpson.
John Williams, the school’s curriculum leader for PE, said: “We are immensely proud of the pupils for their dedication, teamwork and achievement.
“Reaching a national final and having the chance to play at Lord’s is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
Principal Paul Crook said: “The girls are a testament to Penistone Grammar School with their togetherness, friendship and supreme talent breeding success on the cricket pitch.”
