A FUNDRAISING hike for Barnsley Hospice has raised almost £20,000 to support its work.

The ‘Hospice Hike’ began and ended at the hospice in Gawber, and offered eight, 12 or 20-mile routes to complete.

Supporters wore orange and experienced stunning views of the town while travelling through area such as Bretton, Cawthorne, Hoyland and stretches of the Trans Pennine Trail.

Over 100 hikers joined on the day, consisting of hospice staff and volunteers, groups from local businesses and supporters raising money in memory of loved ones.

A huge total of £18,982.60 to support the hospice’s specialist palliative and end of life care was raised through the event.

Julia Radwell, events fundraiser at Barnsley Hospice, said: “Our walks have seen great uptake in the past, but we were blown away by the support of this year’s hike.

“Seeing so many orange t-shirts around Barnsley, people stopping to give us donations and families walking it in memory of loved ones means so much.

“The weather on the day wasn’t the best, but we cannot thank our hikers enough for powering through to make a difference.

“You are all Hospice Heroes and should be so proud.

“We’d also like to thank the volunteers who supported us on the day and the local businesses who donated refreshments to help keep us going.”
