BARNSLEY AC’s Dave Allemby has now been running for 50 years.
The 70-year-old, who lives in Wombwell, started jogging in July 1976 to lose some weight and eventually be fit enough to run the famous Barnsley 6 Road Race. Since then, he has completed more than 2,200 running events and clocked enough miles to do three laps around the world.
After a disappointing run in the Barnsley 10k, he took the over70 prize at the Loxley Lash 5k and won the three-race series for over65 runners. He then ran his fastest time at the Barnsley 5k ParkRun for six months.
Some of his highlights include running his favourite event, the Barnsley 6, for 20 straight years and the London Marathon ten times, representing Great Britain in the World Masters Championships plus taking part in the 2012 Olympic torch relay through Lundwood.
Dave said: “I have gained some amazing friends over the years through running. Joining the then Barnsley Road Runners Club in 1978 made me a more positive person.
“I still compete regularly in events up to 10k and also really enjoy running and volunteering at Locke Park most Saturdays at the Barnsley ParkRun.
“Even last week running in the Barnsley 10k was a brilliant morning. I had a bad run but the support from all the people, especially going through Wilthorpe, kept me going.”
