FIREMEN had a struggle to erect a 25-foot Christmas tree in St Mary’s Church, Barnsley.

First they abandoned the task on receiving an emergency call, and then, when six of them managed to get the tree upright, it went through the bottom of the bin.

The tree has been erected for the hospice's Light A Life ceremonies in church at 3.30pm and 7.30pm on Sunday. Each light on the tree is sponsored in memory of a loved one who has died.

Sue Miller, from the hospice, said: “It was quite a struggle but they managed in the end, we had a laugh about it afterwards.”

Another service is being held in the hospice grounds on Monday at 7.30pm for anyone who did not attend the church services.
