BARNSLEY swim star Blake Bennett was a golden boy at the Yorkshire Championships. Bennett, aged 11, attends St Mary’s Church of England School in Stocks Lane and is also a member of Borough of Barnsley Swimming Club. He bagged the gold medal in the nine years 200 metres freetstyle and 200 IM, while also landing silver in the 200m butterfly.
Meanwhile, fellow Borough of Barnsley swimmers were in action at Melton Mowbray in the Invitation B and C Grade Gala at the weekend. Leading the way in the medal table for the club was Tom Shillaw, winning a brace of gold medals in the B Grade 100m butterfly (1-06.78) and 100m backstroke (1-08.55) and a matching pair of silver medals in his 100m individual medley and breaststroke events in the sixteen-years and over age group. Hot on his heels in the fourteen/fifteen years group was Adam Makings who also did the double, taking gold medals in the B Grade 100m butterfly (1-09.03) and with a strong time of 1-19.45 finished first in the 100m breaststroke. Adam also took the silver medal in the 100m individual medley. In the girls C Grade competition Hannah Barker took first place in the ten/eleven years 50m butterfly with a time of 45.08 as well as securing bronze in the 100m individual medley. In the sixteen-years and over competition Misha Carter won the 100m individual medley (1-27.11) and was placed third in the 100m freestyle.
