BARNSLEY Cricket Club’s new first XI captain Jason Booth says he would love to follow in the footsteps of former skipper Richard Wilkinson and win the Yorkshire League crown.
‘Wilko’ is the only man in the club’s 147-year history to deliver the top prize but Booth, who has skippered the first team before during his first stint with the club in the 1990s, says he would love to knock rivals York off their perch and bring the trophy back to Shaw Lane.
“That is the aim,†he said. “When we first won the league the focus immediately switched to the national cup competition but I think that was a mistake.
“You have to defend your own crown and make sure you win the league again back-to-back before looking at any other competition. “This year the aim is simple. We want to win the Yorkshire League. We also want to win the Heavy Woollen Cup, having won it twice and come so close last season.
