Stallholders at Penistone's new covered market ceased trading and cleared out early - because it was too windy.
Traders were forced to pack up early on health and safety grounds as strong winds hurtled through the open market, sending stall tables and produce flying through the building.
One woman was hit in the face by a stock box and another had a narrow miss when three stall tables were lifted into the air and blown across the market area on Thursday.
Joan Beecroft, who has run a card stall in the market for 30 years, said some traders had contacted Barnsley Council's markets manager Anne Untisz yesterday to tell her about the problem - but they were simply advised to 'pack up and go home'.
Joan said: "It was horrendous. This is our living and we can't just be expected to pack up and go every time there is bad weather."What about when the winter comes?"It looked a mess, there was traders stock blowing all over, people were having to hold their stalls down.
"Everybody is fed up with it, the market is simply not fit for purpose."
The cruck, timber-framed market was built as part of Dransfield Properties £15m town centre regeneration scheme. A contractor was paid £250,000 to install the oak framework.
