THE achievements of Barnsley Boys’ Football team should never be forgotten, says one member of that all conquering side as it approaches its 65th year anniversary.
Alan Ogley was the goalkeeper in the team who saw off Liverpool over two legs back in 1961 to win the Engish Shield.
Alan, who also went on to play for England Schoolboys on seven occasions, said: “Liverpool had a strong side and won the first leg 1-0.
“But we won 2-0 in the second leg in front of 12,500.
“We got watches at the Town Hall for our achievements.
“It was special to be recognised by the town itself.
“I remember that the Barnsley FC team did well in the FA Cup that season and got to the sixth round. It was like we were driving one another on.
“I played three years in a row for Barnsley Boys - first as a 13-year-old whipper snapper.
“We had such a good team and I think there should be more done to celebrate Barnsley Boys.”
Alan went on to play for The Reds and alongside the iconic Bert Trautmann while at Manchester City and he is also in the Hall of Fame at Stockport County.
Other players from that same side to play professionally included Peter Farnsworth (Barnsley), Alan Woodward (Sheffield United), Jimmy Greenhoff (Leeds, Stoke, Manchester United) and John Hobson (Blackpool).
