Barnsley finished off a positive first month of their season with a 3-1 home victory over ten man Huddersfield Town.

Davis Keillor-Dunn scored an early opener then visiting goalkeeper Owen Goodman was sent off on 36 minutes when Luca Connell made it 2-0 at half-time. Keillor-Dunn added another before a late consolation.

The Reds now have 13 points from six games and are unbeaten at home in all competitions.

The only change from the previous league game a week earlier at Wimbledon saw Jono Bland come in for Patrick Kelly. Keillor-Dunn played up front with David McGoldrick on the left wing in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Barnsley came close in the opening minutes when Luca Connell’s swerving 20-yard shot was spilled by Goodman who also denied Keillor-Dunn on the rebound but the flag was up for offside.

Goodman then fumbled a cross by Nathanael Ogbeta straight into the path of Keillor-Dunn who found the net from close range.

Josh Feeney headed over a corner by ex-Red Herbie Kane, who was being booed by the home fans, then Joe Low headed over from a Ryan Ledson cross.

Goodman’s awful afternoon was completed when he rushed out of his box onto the right wing and took McGoldrick out with a high foot, for which he was sent off.

The second goal arrived on 45 minutes and saw a left-wing corner cleared to Connell whose 20-yard shot took a massive deflection and crept into the bottom right corner with substitute goalkeeper Lee Nicholls wrong-footed.

Ogbeta almost turned in a cross by Bland then, in the second half, McGoldrick was put clean through by a fine Vickers pass but took a heavy touch.

Huddersfield had spells of pressure but struggled to create chances and they conceded again late. Keillor-Dunn had just had a goal ruled out for offside, after tapping in an Ogbeta cross, but did make it 3-0 from close range after a Phillips shot was saved.

Joe Taylor pulled one back almost immediately when he was put clean through by a sloppy Ogbeta backpass and round Cooper before netting.

Barnsley (4-2-3-1): Cooper; Watson, Shepherd, Earl, Ogbeta (de Gevigney 87); Phillips, Connell, Bland (Kelly 69); Vickers, Keillor-Dunn, McGoldrick (Farrugia 69).

We can’t lose sight of the fact it’s been a decent start regardless of the result at the weekend. But it would really set our stall out nicely if we got a positive result.”
