A HOYLAND primary school has appealed for locals to donate materials to turn their allotment dreams into reality.

Over the past year, Hoyland Common Primary School have been been working hard to turn their school green.

As a part of the initiative, the school have taken on an allotment plot on Sheffield Road.

The allotment has the potential to become a brilliant opportunity for pupils to experience hands-on outdoor learning.

The school has envisioned restoring the allotments greenhouse for year-round use, developing an outdoor teaching area - and creating a number of raised beds to allow youngsters to grow vegetables, herbs and flowers.

The school already has 64 nature-oriented attending gardening clubs, with more keen to get involved.

Despite the school’s hard work to transform the allotment, they can’t do it alone - which is why they have turned to local people and businesses for support.

The school have asked encouraged handy locals to donate their time or any spare materials.

Cameron Thomas - a teacher at Hoyland Common Primary School - hopes that school’s gardening initiatives have been an antidote of sorts to youngsters overusing screens and devices.

He said: “It’s not every day you hear about a school actively trying to pull children away from screens and devices, but that’s exactly what we’re doing.

“Over the past year, we’ve been working hard to turn our school green.

“As a part of that we’ve taken on an allotment plot on Sheffield Road in Hoyland Common.

“Last weekend, we decided to start an allotment Instagram page.

“We’re documenting the progress and the children’s involvement along the way it’s been lovely seeing the enthusiasm build already.

“We’ve been incredibly lucky to have support from Wentworth Estate, who have helped us get the site cleared back to a blank canvas.

“Now we’re at the exciting stage where the real transformation begins but we need a bit of help from the community.”
