PUPILS at a local primary school are celebrating this week after rebuilding their allotment following a blaze last year.

Year five and six pupils at Queen’s Road Primary School were left devastated following the incident.

A fundraiser was set up and support from parents, local volunteers, companies and the Central Ward Alliance means they have been able to rebuild the allotment and reinstate the much-loved gardening club.

Teaching assistant Nicola Plant said: “We wouldn’t be here today without the fantastic support we have received from parents, the public and local businesses.

“There’s too many to mention, everyone has been so generous with their time and money.”

Central ward councillors Nicola Sumner, Martin O’Donoghue and Janine Moyes attended the event on behalf of the ward alliance which donated £500 to the scheme.

They told the Chronicle: “Clearly the children value the allotment.

“They are having a fantastic time in the gardening club whilst learning about food, plants and how to grow things.

“They showed us around the allotment with great pride.

“The help and time donated by such a wide range of people to see the allotments brought back into use is phenomenal.

“We were delighted to attend and see the value of the investment by the ward alliance to a group within our ward.”
