AS IT HAPPENED
  • 5:34pm
Good evening and welcome to the Chronicle’s live text coverage of Barnsley’s game at home to Manchester United under 21s in the EFL Trophy.
  • 5:46pm
Barnsley: Flavell; de Gevigney, Rooney, Roberts, Ogbeta; Kelly, Yoganathan; Vickers, Phillips, Farrugia; McGoldrick. Subs: Smith, Russell, Shepherd, Cleary, Earl, Keillor-Dunn, Alker.
  • 5:46pm
Conor Hourihane has made eight changes from the league draw at Bradford on Saturday. Only Caylan Vickers, Nathanael Ogbeta and Adam Phillips stay in the 11 while Marc Roberts played for the first time since picking up an injury on the opening day.
  • 5:59pm
The two sides also met last season, with the Reds leading 2-0 thanks to a Vimal Yoganathan brace before conceding three times between the 81st and 87th minute then losing 3-2.
  • 6:10pm
This season, Barnsley started the group stage with a 2-1 loss at Notts County last month, with a red card for Jono Bland who will be suspended for Tuesday’s fixture.
  • 6:19pm
Jacob Devaney, the son of former Barnsley player and coach Martin Devaney, is a regular with the United under 21s. He is the away captain tonight
  • 6:31pm
Lincoln City – who Barnsley host in the final group game on November 11 – are currently top having beaten both County and Manchester United under 21s 3-0.
  • 6:40pm
Barnsley have lost their last six trophy games across three seasons while this will be their first match at home in any competition for almost a month since the 2-0 league defeat against Port Vale on September 27.
  • 6:52pm
Hourihane told the Chronicle: “The plan is to get a win. We will go into the game with the right mindset and attack it as always. “It will be very different to Bradford but whoever we’re playing we need to have the right mindset and get the right results.”
  • 7:00pm
    GAME UNDERWAY
  • 7:02pm
Adam Phillips latches onto a long pass by McGoldrick and draws a good save out of William Murdock
  • 7:04pm
Neil Farrugia up front. McGoldrick, Vickers and Phillips behind him in attacking midfield
  • 7:07pm
    GOAL!
    Jack Fletcher opens the scoring
  • 7:09pm
Poor from Yoganathan. He loses the ball under pressure from Chido Obi on the edge of his box, the ball rolls to Fletcher whose shot hits Rooney and deflects in. He scored twice here last season too
  • 7:10pm
Another attack by the visitors but Ogbeta scrambles it clear
  • 7:11pm
Barnsley win a corner on the left
  • 7:12pm
The Vickers corner is just over Phillips' head and the goalkeeper catches
  • 7:14pm
The visitors are playing out from the back and Barnsley trying to press but it's all pretty flat
  • 7:16pm
A nice Reds move ends in McGoldrick flicking the ball past a defender and being fouled for a free-kick 30 yards out slightly on the right
  • 7:17pm
Vickers' free-kick headed well behind by Vimal. I think he was trying to head it into the six yard box for his team mates but got it wrong
  • 7:18pm
Ogbeta's cross is overhit and out
  • 7:19pm
I would be surprised if there are 1,000 fans here. It could be the lowest attendance ever for a first team game
  • 7:21pm
It's so flat here. Horrible drizzle, no real atmosphere and Barnsley have been rattled by that stinker of an early goal
  • 7:24pm
Big chance for 2-0. Shea Lacey is played in on the right, beats a defender to go clean through but his weak shot is saved
  • 7:24pm
Now Obi cuts in from the left and has a shot which is easily saved
  • 7:26pm
Another Obi chance as he volleys wide from a left-wing cross
  • 7:27pm
So close to 1-1. Ogbeta's cross is headed at close-range by Phillips onto the post then the rebound hits him and is grabbed by the goalkeeper
  • 7:29pm
Barnsley are having a better spell now
  • 7:31pm
Kieren Flavell goes down and Hourihane calls his team over for a chat
  • 7:33pm
    Play back underway
  • 7:36pm
McGoldrick is sometimes playing as almost a defensive midfielder. He's played some decent long balls, the latest puts Farrugia through but he's offside
  • 7:38pm
Fletcher shoots from 22 yards and Flavell gets down to his right to save. That came after a poor pass by Roberts who was put under pressure by Kelly
  • 7:40pm
The experiment of Neil Farrugia up front has not worked so far. He's had no impact. This might come back to bite me if he equalises
  • 7:41pm
    Barnsley win a penalty. Phillips
  • 7:42pm
    Armer fouled him
  • 7:42pm
    GOAL!
David McGoldrick levels with a penalty
  • 7:44pm
Phillips hurt himself when fouled for the penalty which is why McGoldrick took it I think. He comes straight off for Russell holding his upper leg. Not sure how serious. The pen came through pressure on the goalkeeper who gave the ball away
  • 7:45pm
Now Flavell makes another save, keeping out a Lacey effort after a good run
  • 7:45pm
    Four added minutes this half
  • 7:49pm
    HALF-TIME: Barnsley 1, Manchester United u21s 1.
  • 8:03pm
    Attendance: 1528 (283 away)
  • 8:04pm
    SECOND HALF UNDERWAY
  • 8:05pm
Farrugia on the right now and McGoldrick up front
  • 8:06pm
Vickers goes through and is denied by a decent Murdock save
  • 8:06pm
    The corner is cleared
  • 8:08pm
Now McGoldrick played in down the left by Ogbeta and he turns a defender then shoots over from a very tight angle
  • 8:11pm
    GOAL!
David McGoldrick scores again to put the Reds in front
  • 8:12pm
    GOAL!
    Chido Obi replies instantly
  • 8:13pm
Rooney, I think, loses the ball in the middle and Lacey puts Obi clean through to beat Flavell. The lead lasted roughly a minute
  • 8:13pm
Now McGoldrick clean through and it's saved with the flag up anyway
  • 8:15pm
The second Barnsley goal was great work by Vickers, driving through the middle and threading a lovely pass to put him clean through to score
  • 8:16pm
United's Yuel Helafu off with an injury and Finley McAllister comes on
  • 8:18pm
Good cross by Ogbeta to Devaney who takes a touch but a defender puts it behind for a corner
  • 8:18pm
    Vickers corner headed out
  • 8:21pm
    GOAL!
    David McGoldrick has a hat-trick.
  • 8:22pm
    RED CARD
Jack Fletcher sent off for United
  • 8:23pm
Kelly takes a quick free-kick and Vickers gets another assist with a nice through ball to McGoldrick who dinks the ball over the goalkeeper
  • 8:23pm
We think the red card was for dissent
  • 8:26pm
Should be a win now surely
  • 8:28pm
That must be one of the fastest Barnsley hat-tricks ever. 43, 52 and 62 minutes
  • 8:28pm
Looks like Jack Shepherd is coming on
  • 8:29pm
United's goalkeeper is down for treatment
  • 8:29pm
    Shepherd replaces Kelly
  • 8:30pm
    Rooney in midfield now
  • 8:31pm
United corner on the right, played short then the eventual cross is headed out by Roberts
  • 8:33pm
    GOAL!
Neil Farrugia with his first Barnsley goal
  • 8:34pm
Excellent pass by Russell puts him clean through on the right of the box and he finds the bottom left corner
  • 8:36pm
It looks like a case of how many now for the Reds
  • 8:38pm
    GOAL!
Jon Russell gets in on the act
  • 8:39pm
Ogbeta's nice pass behind the defence could be finished by either Vickers or Russell but it's the Jamaica man who finds the bottom right corner when clean through
  • 8:40pm
Keillor-Dunn and Luke Alker on for Ogbeta and Vickers
  • 8:45pm
De Gevigney shoots over from the edge of the box
  • 8:47pm
DKD shoots over from 20 yards
  • 8:54pm
Youngster Alker has a shot blocked in the box
  • 8:54pm
Barnsley just cruising to the win here
  • 8:55pm
    FULL-TIME: Barnsley 5, Manchester United u21s 2.
