IN the midst of Reform sweeping the elections by storm there were two independent councillors who were re-elected proving it’s not all about party politics.
Councillors Jake Lodge and Andy Wray were re-elected to their Worsbrough and Rockingham wards having been tirelessly campaigning over the past few months.
A lot has been said about the national picture painting what happened in local elections, but the duo bucked the trend.
Coun Andy Wray told the Chronicle: “From a personal point of view, I received 1,377 votes in my name, not under a party banner.
“This proves that during my last three years as an elected member for the Rockingham ward the residents were pleased with my efforts.
“It proves there is a shift from the usual ‘my grandad and dad voted Labour so I will’.
“Some good people from all parties lost their roles on Thursday so it will be interesting what will happen, not just in the next four years, but more importantly the next six months.
“The most important thing that must happen now is for all councillors to work together for the people of Barnsley.
“It’s time to deliver the grassroots what residents are always complaining about.
“For me we need to give these basics better attention.
“To deliver a better bin collection, fix the roads, fly-tipping, littering and more importantly focusing on the areas outside of the town centre.”
