Of all the clubs capable of pulling off the best bit of business ahead of the closure of the transfer window it might be Kingstone United.
The County Senior League club have stumbled upon a pair of Romanian strikers who played professionally in their home country. Sergiu Spanoche and Darius Mihail Constantin decided to move to the UK where they can earn more money working in warehouses.
Spanoche, 34, who once played for former Romanian Premier League side Jiul Petrosani, marked his Kingstone debut with a stunning goal in their 4-2 win over Davy FC on Saturday and it was only then that the club realised his pedigree. They hadn't seem him play until he was thrown on from the bench.
"Sergiu just turned up at one of our friendlies and said he wanted to play Saturday football," said club secretary Michael Shirt. "He doesn't speak much English but we gave him a chance on Saturday and he scored a wonderful goal. He cut inside from the right and just dinked it over the 'keeper's head. I've never seen a goal like it. He even celebrated like a professional. We didn't know at the time that he'd played professionally. It's unbelievable really."
Sergiu has now brought his friend Darius, 21, to sign and his background is just as impressive as he played for Champions League qualifiers CFR Cluj's second team and also represented his country at under 18 level. Darius wasn't registered in time to feature in Wednesday's game against South Kirkby Colliery but Spanoche made it three in two with a couple of thunderous headers in their 5-2 win.
The Romanian duo, who work at Asos and Staffline, have differing ambitions. Spanoche, who's been in England a year, told the Chronicle: "I want to play Saturdays then have a beer and a barbecue with my friends. I want a good time.
"I was a professional in Romania but that feels a long time ago. I am proud to play in the country where football was invented and, if it's possible, we will try to get promoted."
Constantin has been in England for just three months and his English is improving. Given his age, he could possibly still have a future in the professional game. He said: "I want to play for Barnsley FC but this is a good start for me. I played for Romania under 18s and for Cluj's second team but I wanted to live in England."
