A SENIOR councillor has denied there is ‘a crisis’ amid complaints of wheelie bins going un-emptied for two months and scores or missed collections across the borough - but admits there are problems.
Entire streets all over Barnsley have been affected and scores of people have been in touch with the Chronicle to report problems, which mainly relate to brown and green bins.
Areas known to be affected include the town centre, Dodworth, Darton, Monk Bretton, Pogmoor, Gawber, Wilthorpe, Athersley, Lundwood, Smithies, Kendray, Hoyland, Wombwell, Darfield, Thurnscoe, Middlecliffe, and Goldthorpe.
Coun Roy Miller, cabinet member responsible for waste management, has apologised to residents who have not had their bins collected and asked people for ‘forbearance’ as the council worked to resolve the problems which are caused by staff annual leave, sickness, short-staffing and vehicle breakdowns. He says all are issues made more difficult by the years of budget cuts suffered, and more stringent regulations in the wake of the Glasgow bin lorry disaster.
