IRENE West has retired after 15 years at a Thurnscoe retirement home and a life devoted to nursing.

“I’ve been overwhelmed by all the good wishes and feel so lucky to have been doing a job I’ve loved for 44 years,” said the 60-year-old who plans to spend more time with her husband and family.

Scottish born Irene was a ward sister at Mexborough Montagu Hospital before becoming matron at The Grove, a nursing home until five years ago.

“I love the elderly and the thing I’ve enjoyed most is being able to make their lives so much easier by putting them in touch with the right people. We’ve had the whole spectrum of care here.”

There was a surprise party for her at The Grove on Friday when she received 50 cards, 10 bouquets and lots of gifts.

But she claims she’s ready to retire.

“I felt so humbled, but you need energy for this job, and that’s what I lack. The staff do a really worthwhile job and look to you for everything. They have been so loyal.”
