THE Old Mill Lane site is to be demolished and rebuilt as part of a £60m overhaul of Barnsley College.

Governors gave their backing to the ambitious proposal this week and the Learning and Skills Council has approved the plan in principle.

College principal Paula Whittle said it was exciting, not just for the college, but the whole borough. She said: "I want the very best for our students, I don't see why they should have second best.

"This will enable us to transform how we provide teaching and learning. "It will put the college at the heart of the community."

The new seven-storey building will replace the existing 50-year-old block. It will include a restaurant, beauty salon travel agency and theatre run by students.
