BUSINESSES near the town centre claimed they have lost thousands in trade with one even resorting to reducing its opening hours - amid roadworks which caused traffic chaos this week.

Racecommon Road was reduced to one-way traffic last weekend for resurfacing work near the top of the road where it meets Park Road.

It remained closed for three days to traffic heading out of Barnsley along its entire length, causing heavy traffic at peak times at other pinch points around town including Dodworth Road and Sheffield Road.

There were also queues along the open downhill side of Racecommon Road, due to increased traffic from side streets which was all forced to turn towards town, and cars struggling to exit the roundabout at the bottom of Racecommon Road due to the absence of the gaps that are normally created by approaching cars turning into the road.

The closure also meant there was nowhere to park outside businesses all along Racecommon Road.
