A SUNDAY cup match had to be abandoned after a fight broke out in the final stages.
Queen Vic FC from Darfield were 4-2 down away to Sheffield's Aston Rosegarth when one of the visiting team was sent off. A spectator allegedly threw a punch at him as he was leaving the pitch, but missed, and hit another Darfield player.
Queen Vic captain James West said: “There was a bit of a scrap between two players. One of ours was sent off, one of theirs was booked.
“As he was going off one of one of the Aston fans threw a punch at him and ended up hitting another of our players.”
Richard Yearsley, Aston club secretary, said: “I’ve never known anything like this. It wasn’t a dirty game at all, until the last five minutes.
“It was about the 85th minute when a Queen Vic player made a silly challenge. I think he knew he was going to be sent off. He then punched the Aston player in the face and was shown a red card.
“As he was going off there was arguing between spectators and someone threw a punch at him.
The referee is to present a report to the Sheffield and Hallamshire FA.
