BARNSLEY COLLEGE music students had a break from usual lessons when Indie legend Tom Hingley dropped in to teach them.

The former frontman of 90s rock band Inspiral Carpets, who turned down a certain Noel Gallagher after an audition and later employed him as a roadie, spent the day with the 110 full time music students.

He did songwriting sessions with the students and also gave them tips on how to advance themselves within the music and creative industries.

Tom, who now teaches in Manchester, acts as a music consultant and DJs as well as fronting new band The Lovers, was impressed by the college's music facilities. He said: "The facilities seem very good, the students seen innovative and the staff seem really nice. It is a positive learning environment.

"I have to find stuff to talk about that is relevant rather than banging on about what is relevant to me. I used to be Noel Gallagher's boss and he has his own mind in terms of music and creativity but he learnt his way in the industry from the Inspiral Carpets.

"What I want to try to get through to young people is to work hard and that has its own integrity."
