MY thanks to Martyn Newsam who responded to an article in Memories regarding an Egon Ronay award handed out to Woolworths.

He was restaurant's chef at Woolworths from 1973 up to it closing in 1984. He was given the Egon Ronay award when the store closed as he was one of the people responsible for winning it back.

"I still think about all the good times I had while working at Woolworths and the great friends I made with the staff and customers."

We also heard from Sandra Proctor (nee Sills) who started work at Woolworths when she was 16. At first she was on on the cake and biscuit counter but when the new store opened she worked in the restaurant being promoted to supervisor.

"I loved working at Woolworths, I still remember the good times we had."

A photograph of the award ceremony was submitted to Memories by Grace Mirfin, whose husband Donald Mirfin was a county councillor.

Sandra is standing to to the left of TV and radio presenter Wilfred Pickles who handed out the awards.
