A DEVELOPER wants to build 272 houses behind the B & Q store at Stairfoot.
The 24-acre site stretches from Tesco on Wombwell Lane to the railway line near Hunningley Lane and since the late 1960s the area has been designated as employment land.
But Stainsby Grange Ltd argues despite marketing there has been a lack of interest from industry during that time.
The firm wants to build 272 homes in a mix of three and two storey detached, town and terraced houses which would be accessed only via Bleachcroft Way — the same road that leads to B & Q.
Councillors argue the proposals are inappropriate because some houses will be just 40 metres away from Tesco and 65 metres from B & Q.
BIG Coun Fred Clowery said: "It is a hell of a lot of houses and to have such a development in that particular area would not be in keeping."
