HOW does a 20-year-old lad pay tribute to a grandfather he is proud of?
Answer? Write a musical about him.
Jack Noble's 'stage name' is Jack Land Noble - a nod to grandfather on his mother's side, Jack Land, 79, of Birch Road, Kendray. He was a renowned boxer and wrestler for 40 years, dubbed one of Barnsley's Sporting Heroes by the book of the same name.
He is the main inspiration for Grappling, his grandson's semi-biographical musical comedy drama to be staged at the Lamproom next year. Young Jack said: "I've tried to create something that's theatrically unique. It takes a look at that old time British wrestling tradition.
"It illustrates the backstage drama, the camaraderie, the tension, the dressing room bust ups, the promoters, and the way the wrestlers were sometimes manipulated by their management.
Grappling will be staged at the Lamproom from June 14 to 19 and tickets go on sale on December 1. Full story in this week's Chronicle.
