Scientific tests in a laboratory have revealed a portion of fish chips and peas from a Barnsley chippie is 93.2 per cent fat free.
Brent Watson, of Y-Pas in Kexborough, said he was sick and tired of the humble chippie getting a 'battering' in the press for being unhealthy, so he sent a portion of his own away to a laboratory in Gloucestershire.
He said: "Whenever there's a story about obesity or unhealthy lifestyles on the TV or the national press, they always show someone coming out of a chippie. They never show them coming out of McDonalds or any other big chain."
Tests showed a portion of his fish chips and peas were lower in fat than the average for fish and chips, and significantly lower than other popular takeaways such as pizza, burger and chips or doner kebab.
"There was only 6.8g of fat per 100g. That's 93.2 per cent fat free. I'm not saying they are a health food you should eat every day, but it's fine to eat them a couple of times a week."
