Richard Keogh has been appointed as Conor Hourihane’s assistant coach at Barnsley, with Tom Harban also joining the first team staff permanently.
Assistant coach Jon Stead, head of performance Elliott Turner and goalkeeper coach Matt Gilks have left the club.
Keogh, 38, made almost 800 appearances across his playing career as a centre-back, including seven seasons at Derby County.
He played 457 times in the Championship, reaching the play-offs on four occasions with Derby but losing them all – including the 2019 final to an Aston Villa side including Hourihane.
They were team-mates for the Republic of Ireland, for whom Keogh won 26 caps and played at Euro 2016.
Keogh retired from playing last year and started coaching at Blackpool where he was caretaker manager for four games between the sacking of Neil Critchley and the appointment of Steve Bruce.
Harban was a youth team player at his hometown club Barnsley and has coached in the academy for years.
Hourihane told the club website: “Firstly I want to thank Jon, Matt and Elliott for their hard work and dedication, it has been a great experience to work with them, but all parties felt a fresh approach was needed.
“I’ve known Richard for a number of years, he is a natural leader and his reputation as a coach has grown massively in the past year. I’m looking forward to working with him again and I know he has the experience, and the skill set required to help me implement my vision for how I want the team to play.
“I’m also delighted that the Club has allowed me to confirm Tom Harban’s role with the first team. Ever since I volunteered with the academy a few years ago, I have been impressed with Tom and I could see how he could improve the players day by day. He worked with me tirelessly towards the end of last season and he deserves his opportunity to step up. Tom is great on the grass, but he also has a great relationship with the analysts within the first team set up which is crucial."
A goalkeeper coach and head of performance are also due to arrive this summer.
