CONCERNS around ‘disrespectful’ pupils and parents at Outwood Academy Carlton have re-emerged once again - and residents say they’re fed up with the school not doing anything.
The school, under the wing of the Outwood Grange Academies Trust, is based on Royston Lane and across from Carlton Cemetery.
For years, residents have expressed their concerns - particularly over parents’ poor and sometimes dangerous parking on double yellow lines during pick-up and drop-off times.
But locals are now saying the situation is continuing and has subsequently got worse - with pupils often being ‘disrespectful’ when questioned about their actions in the cemetery.
Lisa Turner, from Carlton, told the Chronicle: “When I was there last week I had to take an elderly man into the cemetery because the cars were blocking the entrance.
“There’s cars just parked everywhere.
“It needs to be addressed.
“The cars are on double yellow lines and it’s just disgusting.”
Lisa added that pupils’ behaviour while walking through the cemetery is poor - and certainly not something you’d expect to find in a place of rest.
“It’s ruining the area,” she said.
“People aren’t even shutting the gate when they’re going through it.
“When we have to go to visit the cemetery it’s always the same.
“It’s just disrespectful.”
But despite locals airing their concerns directly to the school on a number of occasions, they claim that nothing is being done.
Lisa added: “The school just don’t seem to care.
“We’re sick to death of it.
“The school should be teaching these children to have respect but they’re not.
“It’s disgusting and we’re fed up of it.”
South Yorkshire Police warned that officers are aware of the worries and have the power to fine motorists who choose to flout parking regulations.
A spokesperson said: “We would like to remind people to park considerably when dropping off and picking up children from school.
“If you park on the zig-zag lines or at the school gates, you are putting children at risk.
“You could also be committing an offence and receive a fine.
“Illegal and nuisance parking, especially around our local schools, is a major issue that residents raise on a regular basis.
“Sadly this is a similar picture at most primary schools in the borough where parents are ‘only stopping’ for ten minutes to pick their kids up before moving off, only to be replaced by the next car that’s also ‘only stopping’.”
When contacted by the Chronicle, the school declined to provide a statement but confirmed parents have been reminded about parking and tutors will ‘address the importance of good conduct’.
