Barnsley have signed Derby County centre-back Jake Rooney on loan for the season.

The 22-year-old played alongside Reds head coach Conor Hourihane at Derby in the 2022/23 season then was part of the squad that got promoted last year - although he made just 12 league appearances across both seasons amid injuries.

The former Tranmere Rovers and Burnley youngster - who can also play at right-back - has played twice in the EFL Cup this season.

He is the cousin of former England captain Wayne Rooney and ex-Red John.

Sporting director Mladen Sormaz said: “We’re very pleased to bring Jake to Oakwell for the season.

“His versatility across central defence and right back makes him a strong addition to the squad.

“To date in his career Jake has shown real resilience and professionalism, and we believe this loan is the right environment for him to continue his development while contributing to our ambitions this year.”

Head coach Conor Hourihane added: “Jake is a fantastic addition to our squad. He’s young, hungry, and has already shown maturity beyond his years at Derby. His ability to play across the backline gives us extra options, and we’re excited to see what he can bring to our team this season.”
