ALMOST 4,500 fines have been issued to motorists for blue badge misuse in Barnsley over a five-year period - including one driver who was caught nine times.
The figures, obtained via a Freedom of Information (FOI) request by Evans Halshaw, show that 4,465 fixed penalty notices were dished out by the council between 2019 and 2024.
The council confirmed there were 260 repeat offenders, with Eldon Street in the town centre and the Metrodome’s car park being the most-abused places.
Julie Wallman, Evans Halshaw’s marketing director, said: “Disabled parking bays exist to ensure safe and accessible travel for people with limited mobility, whether they’re heading to a supermarket, medical appointment, or just going about their day.
“These figures show just how common this issue is across Barnsley and the rest of the UK, and highlight the importance of keeping accessible spaces available, particularly as more people rely on mobility solutions to support independent living.”
