A COCAINE-FUELLED man has been jailed after killing a woman in a crash on Haigh’s roundabout.
On October 25 last year, 30-year-old Jake Cooley, from Doncaster, crashed into 64-year-old Deborah Girgis who later died.
Deborah had exited the M1 and was stationary at the roundabout waiting to leave the slip road.
Cooley, failed to negotiate the right-hand bend as he travelled around the roundabout and drove straight at Deborah.
Her car was pushed against two lanes before coming to a stop on the grass verge.
Deborah was taken to hospital where she sadly later died from her injuries.
Cooley was arrested at the scene, and tested for drink and drugs.
He failed the roadside test for cannabis and cocaine, and his blood results later showed he was nearly six times over the limit for cocaine.
He has been jailed for six years.
Sergeant John Taylor said: “My thoughts remain with everyone who loved Deborah and while this sentencing brings a conclusion to securing justice for Deborah and her family, it does not end their grief.
“Poor decisions made by Cooley led to Deborah’s death.
“His selfish actions to get behind the wheel with drugs in his system and the lack of concentration cost Deborah her life.
“Everyone deserves to return home from their journeys and shouldn’t lose their lives because of a lack of regard from other drivers.
“We all have a part to play in ensuring our roads are safe for all road users, and Cooley had no regard for this.
“I hope knowing that he will now serve time in prison for his actions brings Deborah’s family a small amount of closure.”
In addition to Cooley’s prison sentence, the judge sentenced him to an eight-year driving disqualification and ordered him to re-sit an extended test.
