TWO people were rescued from a blaze at a retirement complex in Worsbrough Common on Tuesday.

Firefighters were called to reports of a fire on Chestnut Court, off Cope Street, at around 12.50pm.

Six fire engines attended the scene and the blaze, believed to have been started accidentally, was extinguished around an hour later.

Two people were rescued from the property and transferred into the care of the Yorkshire Ambulance Service.

Coun Roy Bowser, who represents the Worsbrough ward, thanked firefighters for their quick response.

He said: “Your efforts undoubtedly saved the lives of two people.

“Thank you for your selfless and courageous dedication to keeping our community safe.”

Chestnut Court is operated by Yorkshire Housing.

Jon Thompson, Head of Operations at Yorkshire Housing, said: “There was a fire in a flat at our scheme, Chestnut Court in Barnsley on Tuesday afternoon.

“We’re continuing to work closely with the fire service, and our priority right now is making sure customers affected have the support they need while safety checks and repairs are carried out.”
