KICKBOXER Lily Thompson was ‘absolutely beyond delighted’ at being recognised as Cadet Fighter of the Year at The Combat Academy’s annual awards evening.

Netherwood Academy student Lily lives in Wombwell with her parents and two brothers.

She said: “I’ve been consistently busy all year. In May I won the World Kickboxing Union (WKU) English title on the Jackhammer promotion.

“Not long afterwards I took the TMA title in Wales having emerged victorious in a four-girl tournament. This fight ended up going to a one round judgement and I took the TMA tournament prize title.

“In the autumn I fought a Spanish opponent on War Fight Series for the ISKA European title and got a unanimous decision after five gruelling rounds.”

Lily was also part of the Combat Academy squad that travelled to Australia to represent England at the ISKA world championships.

“I’m so proud to have won every single contest and return home with five gold medals. On returning home I earnt my second dan black belt within two weeks and with distinction and leaving me with a fight record of ten wins in 11 matches.

“I’m hoping to qualify for the ISKA 2026 championships being held nearer home in Portugal.”

She added: “My appreciation is for the coaches and all who believe in me even when I doubt myself. I’m especially grateful to my parents and my uncle Richard who never misses a fight.

“The ladies at kickboxing are like second mums and especially Nikki Cooper who keeps me on track and is always there for a cuddle.

“2025 has been a huge year for me but even bigger things are planned for 2026.
