A NEW sign put up outside Barnsley Town Hall offering advice to locals and tourists has had the opposite effect - after numerous spelling errors were made on it.
The sign, placed behind the town hall, was recently erected with a map to help people find their way around the town.
However, upon closer inspection the sign says ‘Shambels Street’ and ‘Cenetary Square’ instead of their correct spellings.
The faux pas was spotted by Liberal Democrat councillor Chris Wray.
He told the Chronicle: “Following the mishap with the parking sign on Dodworth Road, it was hard not to spot mistakes on our information boards in the town centre.
“Shambles Street is ideal for one of the best Italian’s in town, a haircut, or a beer on a night out.
“It’d be a ‘shambels’ if our new tourists couldn’t find it because of the spelling issue, while also going past our ‘Cenetary’ Square sculpture.
“That could be described as the shambles of the centenary.”
A council spokesperson said: “We are aware that some of the details on the wayfinding totem require amending.
“They will be updated in due course.”
