A young mum has praised the quick thinking actions of a British Gas for saving her daughter's life.

Phoebe Allatt, two, was choking when the man, who wants to remain anonymous, grabbed her, hit her hard on the back, turned her upside down and lifted her back up again.

The youngster had managed to swallow a pom pom from a Christmas card she had made at nursery.

Phoebe's mum, Megan Allatt, 21, of Peartree Orchard, Royston, said the tot was playing at home when she heard her struggling for breath.

"I just want to thank the gas man from the bottom of my heart."

Megan was so overwhelmed by his actions, she posted a public thank you on the British Gas Facebook page.

More than 26,000 people have since 'liked' the post and hundreds have commented how brave he was to step in.

A British Gas spokesman said the engineer is an 'unassuming' person and has told his employer he did 'what anybody else would do'.

* In a similar incident, two police officers were praised for coming to the help of an 11-month-old baby who had stopped breathing for three minutes in Barnsley interchange.

PC Jane Rees and Special Constable Simon Hegarty were on foot patrol when they heard Jordan Carroll's screams for help for her son, Taylor-Blake.

Jordan, 21, of Park View, Royston, said she noticed her baby had turned blue while in the GT News shop.

The officers gave the baby lifesaving CPR, chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth, and eventually he began to breathe for himself and was taken to Barnsley hospital.

Jordan said: "I'm so grateful those officers were there, otherwise I don't know what would have happened.

"I cannot thank them enough, they are lifesavers."
