A FOOTBALLER with links to the region’s story has gone on show at the UK ambassador’s residence in Santiago, Chile.

FA Cup-winning striker George Robledo was born in Chile but raised in West Melton.

He later played for Barnsley FC before making the move to Newcastle United where he became a legendary figure.

George would have turned 100 this year and in honour of his achievements an exhibition opened in the Chilean captial.

George’s daughter, Liz, said: “They open the doors of the house to the public and, outdoors, they set up a tent just for my beloved father’s exhibition.

“There were no more exhibitors in place.

“It was a great honour and a lot of hard work went in.

“The Anglo-Chilean links are strong and they keep on getting stronger.

“It was a very special occasion.”

Liz was in London earlier this year and received a commemorative certificate from the FA.

She added: “The FA’s beautiful certificate was displayed with a gold colour frame next to the book on my dad by Spencer Vignes (Postcards from Santiago) and the mould of the blue plaque which is in West Melton.

“They had an estimated attendance of 1,380 visitors between 10am to 4pm which is amazing considering there were 900 places available to be booked.”
