DANIEL Stendel is set to return to Oakwell next week to formally begin his second stint as Barnsley head coach.

The 52-year-old was appointed last month and has been working with the Reds from his home in Germany, as well as a brief stay in the UK in late May.

But he will return full-time ahead of the players coming back for pre-season on Wednesday, June 24.

The German is expected to put the squad through an intense summer of training with minimal days off and plenty of work both on fitness and his style of play. He is thought to have asked for the Reds to not play any midweek friendlies so he can focus on training throughout the week, with double sessions expected regularly.

They are likely to add an assistant coach and an analyst to the backroom staff with the latter more likely to be someone Stendel knows from Germany.

Last time, Stendel was assisted by Barnsley man Dale Tonge who is currently out of work after leaving Rotherham United earlier this year.

Barnsley already have first team assisant coach Tom Harban and goalkeeper coach Scott Flinders.
