A NEW piece of artwork celebrating the founder of Barnsley Football Club has been unveiled - and the group behind it say there’s plenty more to come.

Based across from Oakwell, the artwork portrays the founder of Barnsley FC, Reverend Tiverton Preedy.

It was painted by artist Paul Staveley, who also completed the artwork on Bala Street, having been commissioned to do the work by new group REDWALL 1887.

The group comprises Josh Simms, Matthew Lovett of Eyup and Down, Thomas Webster from Red All Over and fan Craig Powell.

Josh told the Chronicle: “The style gives a subtle reference to ‘The Godfather’ films as he was seen as a very respected man throughout his life.

“He was also someone who nurtured and developed people everywhere he went so we thought it would be a fitting tribute to honour the man who made the football club what it is today.

“We have all previously been involved in completing the Bala Street mural and the money hat was left over from that project has funded this new artwork.

“We have another one currently in progress which will all have been completed over the next week.

“After these projects are finished we will be launching a new public fundraiser for a second big mural near Oakwell again with details to be announced very shortly on our socials.

“Hopefully the people of Barnsley can come together once more with their amazing generosity to help create another visual work of art.

“As a group we want to keep making these projects happen as often as possible for everyone in the town so they can feel proud of where they come from and also relate to its rich history no matter how young or old you are.”
