Barnsley College's hair and beauty department has been recognised as a centre for expertise for its apprenticeships.

The accolade recognises its hairdressing and beauty therapy apprenticeships following an inspection in October by the Hair and Beauty Industry Association (Habia), the government-recognised industry authority.

It is one of the first hair and beauty training providers in the country to be granted the status for delivering 'the very highest level of learning in the sector'.

A spokesman for Habia said the college has 'fantastic premises and resources', and assessors were 'highly delighted' by what they had seen and the welcome staff and students had provided.

He said: "It's no idle boast - centres of expertise are the best of the best. They are the training providers that go the extra mile in what they offer to employers and learners, and have strong links with local schools and businesses."

Karen Carr, programme manager for beauty at the college, said: "We are incredibly proud of this achievement and it confirms for our students, staff and local employers that we are excellently placed to prepare our students for future employment in realistic working environments."
