The new museum in Barnsley town hall opened its doors for the first time yesterday, revealing some of what visitors can expect to see.
Experience Barnsley, on the ground floor of the town hall, boasts an impressive collection items donated by the public, including a lace wedding dress from around the time of World War II.
The donor had saved coupons to buy the lace from Butterfield and Masseys to make the dress while her husband worked away in the special forces executive in France.
John Tanner, project manager, said: "There are some wonderful things which will be displayed and some powerful stories which have been shared by members of the public."
Barnsley FC is honoured with a display of artefacts including the match ball from the 1912 match when Barnsley won the FA Cup.
Barnsley actress Katherine Kelly has also donated items of clothing she wore while playing character Becky McDonald in Coronation Street.
