Students and staff, past and present, lined the street as the funeral cortege of former music teacher Richard Tolson passed Barnsley College.

Richard, known as Rich T, died on September 2 aged 40, after being diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in February.

He had been at the college for 18 years and was the head of music and performing arts.

Many were in tears as they released coloured balloons when the cortege paused outside the college on Church Street on Tuesday.

Former student Jack Leach, 19, of Moor Bank Close, Wombwell, was taught music technology by Rich for two years.

He is now studying music production in Leeds. He had no idea Rich was ill and was shocked to learn of his death.

"He was a really kind, fun person who always tried to make things interesting and fun.

"He taught me everything I know, I think I owe him one."

Zak Greaves, 18, of Ardsley Road, Worsbrough, was once presented with the college's Katherine Kelly Award for acting by Rich.

He said: "He was always so supportive of us and came to see our shows.

"He even took us to some variety shows."

Mackenzie Field, 17, of South Kirkby, attended with his friends Luke Holdsworth, of High Avenue, Mapplewell, and Tom Ford, of Highfield Avenue, Athersley South, both 17, who study graphic design.

Luke said: "We wanted to come because we like the Arctic Monkeys and he taught Alex (Turner) and Matt (Helders).

"Someone who sets a career off like that is a pretty good guy."

Abbie Wheeler, 16, of Priory Road, Lundwood, added: "Mr Tolson's wife has taught us and we wanted to show our respect. She's helped me a lot at school. She's devastated."
