BARNSLEY Catholic Club is being sold because it is not making a profit.

The club, formerly on Falcon Street, took over premises in Doncaster Road in 1989.

But at a general meeting on Sunday members reluctantly voted to close the club and sell the building — despite ten new members enrolling this year.

Any profit made from the sale will be distributed between the remaining 76 members.

A spokesman, who is close to the club’s committee, said: “It’s purely a question of falling membership numbers.

“Of the 76 members, 17 are senior citizens. The club is ticking over but it really is not making profit, it’s just surviving. With costs like heating, lighting and staffing going up we could not carry on.”
