NEARLY 2,500 new houses could be built in the Dearne area in the next 20 years according to maps unveiled by the council which set out what land should be used for across Barnsley.

The local plan is about to open for six weeks of consultation in which time people can submit their views.

The former Reema estate and adjoining land off School Street, Thurnscoe, accounts for 752 of the properties.

A 14-acre site south of Bridge Lane at Thurnscoe could accommodate 420 houses, the plan says, with a further 26 on a site south of Lindley Crescent, and another 45 at Brunswick Street, both in Thurnscoe.

In Goldthorpe there are seven sites, a proposed 144-home site at Bolton House Farm, Barnsley Road, and another 64 on the opposite side of the road, west of Holly Grove.

A site north of East Street is allocated for 167 properties, and the former Dearne High school site will take 103, it says.

In Bolton-on-Dearne a plot for 444 homes has been identified east of the Broadwater Estate.

Coun Roy Miller said: "We've got to look forward as a borough. We've got high demand for housing, we need to bring business in and we need to create jobs for our young people."
