CHANCELLOR George Osborne has backed plans to dual the A61 between Tankersley's A616 roundabout and junction 36 on the M1.

The chancellor tweeted his support on Wednesday and it was re-tweeted by Penistone east councillor Robert Barnard.

Tankersley residents complain that their narrow lanes are used as rat-runs as drivers try to avoid congestion at the A616 roundabout. Coun Barnard said: "Dualling would smooth traffic flow off the A616 onto the A61, north and south, as well as onward to the M1.

"Any improvement to the A61 will be welcomed by residents of Pilley, Tankersley and Howbrook. If it reduces delays at Westwood and junction 36 commuters will no longer seek to avoid them by driving through those villages."
