Barnsley completed their pre-season friendlies with a 2-1 win over Championship side Huddersfield Town at Oakwell on Saturday.

The visitors took the lead but the Reds came back through goals from fit-again Sam Winnall and Mason Holgate, who is back in the team after a trial with Manchester United but has not signed an extension to his contract and could still leave the club before the deadline on September 1.

Huddersfield striker Nakhi Wells beat Marc Roberts twice in the box before firing a shot from the left of the box into the top right corrner to give the Terriers the lead after 20 minutes.

A quarter of an hour later, Winnall ran onto a mishit backpass by former Barnsley transfer target Kyle Dempsey before rounding the goalkeeper and equalising.

Holgate saved a Joel Lynch headed off the line before Town goalkeeper Alex Smithies tipped over a free-kick by Dan Crowley, 17, who impressed after signing on loan from Arsenal the previous day.

Holgate got the winner three minutes into the second half when he tapped in a low corner from Josh Scowen at the near post.

Barnsley had more chances to extend their lead as Marley Watkins' low shot was tipped wide by Smithies and trialist Simeon Jackson hit the bar after an impressive exchange of passes with fellow substitute Conor Wilkinson.

Ex-Red Jacob Butterfield could not beat home goalkeeper Adam Davies with several long-range shots while another former Barnsley captain Martin Cranie came off the bench.
