Barnsley registered their fifth successive League One victory as they won 1-0 at Bradford City in a Yorkshire derby on Tuesday.

A third-minute Marley Watkins header proved to be the winner and the result sent the Reds four places up to 13th in the table.   They are now just seven points off the play-offs and eight clear of the relegation zone.

Ashley Fletcher made his full debut as he came in for the injured Adam Hammill in the only change from the side that beat Rochdale 6-1 on Saturday.

Barnsley got the perfect start when Watkins headed home in a brilliant cross by stand-in left-back George Williams with the visitors' first attack of the game. Watkins, Fletcher and Sam Winnall all put efforts off target in the next ten minutes.

At the other end, Jamie Proctor failed to test Adam Davies with a shot on the turn after an error by Alfie Mawson, who then limped off injured and was replaced by Marc Roberts on 18 minutes.

Bradford's best chance of the first half came in the 28th minute when Williams saved off the line from a Josh Morris shot before the ball hit a Bradford man and trickled just wide.

Winnall curled a 20-yard shot just wide of the top right corner then Watkins nodded a Lloyd Isgrove cross narrowly off target.

In the second half, Bradford's Josh Morris shot just wide then Barnsley's Josh Brownhill had a fine effort tipped over.                 Reds goalkeeper Adam Davies' terribly sliced clearance was not punished by Proctor who shot wide of the totally empty net 40 yards out.

But there were no major scares after that and the Reds held on to win. The hosts had the better of most of the match but struggled to carve out many clear openings against an excellent Barnsley defensive performance.
