HOYLAND’S Beggar and Gentleman pub has been given Asset of Community Value status by Barnsley Council - meaning it is protected from property developers.
Barnsley branch of the Campaign for Real Ale applied in October last year for the pub, the land it stands upon and its car park, to be included in the council’s list of Assets of Community Value.
And having considered the application and hearing the pub’s owners Enterprise Inn questioned the validity of the nomination, the council’s director of legal aid and governance concluded it to be valid and within the definition of land of community value.
This now means that if the Market Street pub, which shut unexpectedly earlier this year when long-standing landlord Michael Davies left the premises, was to be sold for purposes other than its current use, there would be an opportunity for the community to step in with an offer to buy it instead.
