THIS is the first look at a new piece of public art being specially commissioned to remember the brave Barnsley soldiers killed during the Battle of the Somme.

A series of striking Perspex plaques etched with the photographs of local soldiers who died in the battle will be put up outside Barnsley Town Hall as part of a Somme commemoration event taking place later this year.

About 800 men from across the borough died during the battle, the bloodiest of the First World War which saw more than a million die.
