A BARNSLEY man is targeting Paralympic glory, fighting his way to recovery just a year after a life-changing road accident.

Motorcyclist Jonathan Bates, 45, suffered severe brain injuries, memory loss, a broken neck and two broken vetebrae in the accident on Oakdale, Worsbrough Dale, in February last year.

But now, 15 months after his devastating smash, Jonathan has been picked as someone with potential to join the British Paralympic shooting team.

“Things are getting slowly better. The garage has been converted into a bedroom and wetroom, and I’m a production manager for engineering company CTLSeal in Ecclesfield, who made me a ramp so I can get in and out of the house.

“I had hit rock bottom. It was one of those things you always think would happen to someone else. I hit a pothole on the road and the accident happened.

“But honestly now I do think that life goes on. I’m doing all I can, I have my family, friends, a job.”
